Chapter Seven

Reality intruded before dawn broke. Cane woke first, a lifelong early riser, and grinned when he remembered. Kaitlin lay spooned against his body, her back against his front, with hair awry. He didn’t think she had ever been prettier. He longed to linger, to enjoy being in bed with her, but his chores waited. Kaitlin would have to be at work, too, and he imagined she wanted to go home so she could shower and change. He hated to wake her, his sleeping beauty, but he did.

“Hey, honey, rise and shine,” he said, stroking her wild hair back out of her face with a tender hand. “It’s time to get around.”

She wiggled a little before she woke and opened her eyes. Her body tensed a little but relaxed when she rolled to face him. “I don’t want to go anywhere.”

Cane gave a short laugh. “I don’t either but it’s Monday. Don’t you have to work?”

Her eyes opened wide. “Oh, dear. Yes, I do. What time is it?”

“About five. You’ve got plenty of time.”

“I don’t. Oh, Cane, I can’t be late.”

“Settle down, woman. I’ll take you home as soon as you’re ready. You won’t be late, I promise.”

They had time for coffee and toast, nothing more, but he enjoyed it and he thought despite the rush Kaitlin did too.

“What’s your week like?” he asked on the way into town.

“Busy,” she said with a sigh. “I have a city council meeting to cover tonight. It should be interesting because the mayor may be asked to resign. Tuesday, I’m covering a Chamber of Commerce luncheon meeting and a special road district closed meeting in the evening. I have several things daytime Wednesday but nothing after that because it’s church night…”

“Hallelujah,” Cane chimed in. “Maybe we can get together that evening.”

Kaitlin laughed. “Amen. I would like that. Thursday is several events at the junior college and Friday I’m busy all day. I even have an event on Saturday but it’ll be over by noon. Plus I make my news rounds to the police, fire, and county sheriff every day, check with the schools every other day, and swing by the courthouse a few times a week.”

“So Wednesday, Friday night, Saturday after noon, and Sunday are open?”

She nodded. “And any free time I have is yours except for time to go to the hairdresser. I need a trim so bad.”

Cane didn’t see anything wrong with her hair but he knew when to keep quiet. “How about I pick you up Wednesday after work? Five thirty?”

“Five thirty would be perfect.”

“We’ll grab something to eat, maybe see a movie.”

“That sounds like a plan. Cane?”

“Yeah, honey?”

“Can I call you tomorrow night after I’m home, just to talk a few minutes?”

Warmth blossomed in his chest and spread. “You can call me anytime, Kait, day or night. You’ve got my landline and cell numbers both, right?”

“I do.”

“And I’ve got yours. I might call you too if I can figure out when you’re not busy.”

She rested her left hand on his leg and he thought the slight heat might burn through his jeans.
